Alum or aluminum potassium sulfate is a white crystalline powder that is completely soluble in water. It is one of the most common mordants used for dyeing various types of fibers. One of its significant properties is that it does not affect the shades of pigments (it brightens yellow), but rather helps to bind them more strongly and permanently to the fabric. It also enhances the lightfastness of dyed fabrics, making them more resistant to fading in sunlight. Alum is used not only in the textile industry but also in leather tanning and the cosmetics industry.

For better results when mordanting different fabrics like silk and wool, alum can be combined with cream of tartar. For cotton fabrics, it is recommended to use washing soda instead.

It is important to note that alum dissolves better in hot water.

Recommended usage is 15-20% of the dry weight of the fabric.
